A GPON access network shares one optical distribution network among multiple subscribers. The OLT sits at the provider side, while an ONU or ONT sits at the customer side. Passive optical splitters divide the signal without needing power in the field. Understanding these roles makes provisioning and fault isolation much easier.

OLT — the provider-side controller

The Optical Line Terminal terminates PON interfaces, authorizes customer devices, applies service profiles, and hands traffic toward the provider's Ethernet and IP network. The exact provisioning model differs by vendor, so use the documentation for the specific OLT software version.

ONU and ONT — the customer-side device

ONU is a broad term for an optical network unit. ONT is commonly used for the unit located at the customer premises. These devices convert the PON optical signal into Ethernet, Wi-Fi, voice, or other subscriber interfaces.

What the splitter does

A passive splitter divides one feeder fiber into multiple distribution fibers. A higher split ratio serves more endpoints but increases optical loss. The design must remain within the optical budget supported by the chosen PON class and equipment.

Profiles are as important as optical registration

An ONT can appear online while the customer's service still fails. VLAN mapping, service-port rules, bridge/router mode, PPPoE credentials, bandwidth profiles, and upstream routing all need to match the intended service.

Optical power is a diagnostic signal, not the whole diagnosis

Receive power that is outside the vendor's acceptable range can cause instability or LOS. But normal optical power does not prove that VLAN, PPPoE, DHCP, routing, DNS, or bandwidth policies are correct. Troubleshoot Layer 1 first, then work upward.

Keep vendor interoperability realistic

Some OLTs support third-party ONTs with limited or mixed compatibility. Basic registration may work while advanced features do not. Test firmware, OMCI behavior, VLAN services, and management before standardizing a mixed-vendor deployment.
